Identify crosses (Intentional Crossing Nursery)
After identifying your parents, you’ll create your cross list on the Crosses tab. This tab is divided into three subtabs: Add Crosses, Cross Pattern, & Manage Crosses.
Add crosses
Once you’ve created your parent list, you’ll be redirected to the Add Crosses subtab. You’ll see three sections: (A) the female parent browser, (B) the male parent browser, and (C) crosses text area where parents are crossed.
There are two ways to add crosses:
Cross parents from the browser - Manually select female and male parents and click the Pair button.
Use of Input Crosses text area - Copy-paste crosses using this format: <entry code>|<entry code>. Make sure that the parents used exist in the parent list.
Cross parents from the browsers
1. From your list of female and male parents, tick the checkboxes of the parents you wish to cross. Below the Input Crosses text area, click Pair. Your crosses will then be displayed in the text area.
If you wish to create self-crosses for a parent, tick the checkbox(es) of the parent(s) then click Self.
2. You may review or modify your crosses, then click Add.
3. A modal window will appear showing the Crosses Creation Summary, which includes the respective total number of valid and invalid crosses. Valid crosses are automatically added to the cross list. Invalid crosses are left out in the text area for checking.
If you wish to keep adding crosses, click Add More. Otherwise, click Manage Cross List to proceed to the Manage Crosses Subtab where you can view and manage your cross list.
4. If there's any invalid cross, click Add More to go back to the crosses in the input text area.
5. Hover over the question mark beside the row with the invalid cross to check the reason why it’s invalid. It can be that either or both of the parents have duplicate germplasm, or the cross combination already exists.
To add crosses from the duplicate germplasm, toggle to Entry code and continue adding crosses.
Input crosses
This method is highly encouraged if you have a long list of predefined crosses.
1. Copy-paste the crosses from your external list onto the Crosses text area. Make sure that you follow the standard format (e.g. “IR100007|IR100029”). After you’ve inputted your crosses, click Add.
3. If there's any invalid cross, click Add More to go back to the crosses in the input text area.
4. Hover over the question mark beside the row with the invalid cross to check the reason why it’s invalid. It can be that a parent does not exist in the parent list, or either/both of the parents have duplicate germplasm.
If it’s the former, make sure to replace the parent with the correct one.
If it’s the latter, you will be notified right away on the Crosses Creation Summary modal window.
Replace all crosses
If you wish to replace all the current crosses on the experiment, click Replace. This will erase ALL the current crosses in this experiment and add the valid crosses in the text area.
Clear input text area
To remove the crosses from the input text area, click Clear.
Create cross patterns
Another method of adding crosses is to create cross patterns. Parents are added by pairs or triplets and are automatically reflected in the planting arrangement.
Assign cross patterns
Before creating patterns, you must select the parents to be replicated in the crosses. From the Cross Pattern subtab, you will see the same browser as the Add Crosses subtab. The difference is that you will need to select one parent from one browser for replication and multiple parents from the other.
1. Toggle on to enable multiple selection of either female or male browsers.
2. Tick the of one parent for a single selection and one or more parents for multiple selections. Select either Pair or Triplet to proceed with creating the cross pattern.
6. Repeat the steps until all the parents have assigned cross patterns.
