Create a cross parent nursery

Crossing nurseries in the EBS can be intentional or cross parent nurseries. In a cross parent nursery, a set of germplasm can be added as parents, but the cross design is not yet finalized at the time of planting.

Currently, the EBS Core Breeding supports the following hybridization workflows:

  1. Staggered planting - an entry can be planted multiple times, and each planting batch (which is considered as one rep) is equivalent to one block.

  2. Block planting - one (or more) entry is equivalent to one block.

In a cross parent nursery, it is possible to add parents from other nurseries or trials as long as they are planted at the same site and in the same year and season.

Cross parent nursery allows the breeder to select parents, and assign roles (female, male, or both) based on phenotyping/genotyping results.

Now that you know how cross parent nursery is supported in the EBS, let’s create your frst one!

Provide basic information

You are first required to give basic information about the experiment and optionally describe the experiment by providing additional details.

1. From the Create Experiment page, click the drop-down field under Experiment Type and select Cross Parent Nursery.

2. Wait for the page to load the default values (Experiment Type, Crop, Program, and Experiment Code).

Click on the Default Values header to expand that section and see the default values.

3. Fill in all fields marked with an asterisk ( * ).

Although the remaining fields are optional, we encourage you to fill these in so that your experiment information is complete and easier to identify for future use.

4. Once done, in the upper right corner click Save.

5. Wait for the notification that the experiment is successfully created.

Great job! Let’s proceed to our next step - identifying parents.
