Top menu and left navigation

Top Menu

The top menu is the main header of the EBS browser. It contains quick actions and shortcuts to different sections of the EBS. Let’s discuss each part of the top menu.

Open left navigation

By default, the left navigation (discussed in detail below) is visible and this tab will not be available. However, if the left navigation is hidden, you can click Show left nav () or use the shortcut Alt + L to make it visible.

Left Navigation

The left navigation is a key feature that lets you navigate the Core Breeding tools. To use the left navigation, simply click the tool you want to use and wait to be redirected to the main page.

Dashboard

The dashboard is the landing page of the EBS website and contains helpful information or shortcuts that the user can use to navigate the system. It can be accessed by clicking on Dashboard () or using the shortcut Alt + X.

Data filters

When you are viewing experiments, occurrences, or products, you can quickly filter out what is visible to you by using data filters. The main filters you can set are the program(s) to which you belong and other filters such as year, season, stage, and site. You also have the option to see experiments made by everyone under that program or just your own.

1. Access the data filter by clicking on Data filters () or using the shortcut Alt + V.

2. Type the year, season, stage, and site that you want to filter then click Apply.

3. You can also save a filter for future use by clicking Save on the upper portion of the data filters tab. A pop-up window will prompt you to name the saved filter. Once satisfied click Save.

If you want to use any of your saved filters, click the current filter and select one of your saved filters. The dashboard will display information based on the new data filter.

4. If you want to rename your saved filter, you may do so by clicking Data filters () then the dropdown button beside the Save button > Update filter. The modal window will prompt again to let you rename the filter.

Favorites

If you use a certain tool quite often, it can be helpful to mark this as your favorite by clicking Favorites () beside its name on the main page of that tool. To view all your favorite tools, click the on the top menu or use the shortcut Alt + A. A pop-up window will appear with a list of your favorite tools which you can click to be redirected.

Recently used tools

The Recently Used Tools widget is similar to the Favorites widget. It shows the tools that you recently opened and the time you last opened them. You may click on one of them to visit the tool again. This can be accessed by clicking Recently used tools () or using the shortcut Alt + R.

Current filters

The current filters tab is a quick visual to show which filters are currently applied. By default, this will always show your current Program. To change the current filters, click the Data Filters () button.

Search

Each tool will have its own way of searching for a specific item (e.g. experiment, seed, etc.). However, the Search on the top menu acts as a general search. You can look for either germplasm, package, trait, experiment, tool, or person. Simply click on Search () to access the search field, type the word or phrase you’re looking for, select from the dropdown menu the entity type, and click enter.

If you are having difficulty getting results, you may click on the right side of the search field for a guide on how to use the general search. You may also refer to the guide below.

Help

If you feel confused or you encounter an issue while using the EBS, click Help () on the right of the top menu for Help. Here you will find different sources of helpful information.

Support Desk

The support desk is where you can submit feedback on how to improve parts of the system, report a bug, or request assistance. Make sure you have access to your registered email address since this is where you will get updates on the requests that you’ve submitted.

User Guides

When you click User Guides it will take you to the About page of the EBS. Here you can find helpful information about the EBS, its concepts and terminologies, and user guides.

Account

The account tab contains information and tools that can help you manage your account. You may access the different tools in the submenu by clicking Account () at the rightmost of the top menu.

My profile

You can access your user profile through the account submenu by clicking or using the shortcut Alt + M.

Here you can see your (1) account information, (2) your team and team members, and (3) your most recently used tools.

You cannot change your account information in the System. If you would like to request a change, contact your System Administrator or Data Managers for support.

If you want to add yourself to another team/program, click the + beside Teams. A pop-up window will appear, where you can select your desired team and your role. Once satisfied, click Add.

Preferences

You can customize the look and feel of the EBS to better suit your preferences by clicking or using the shortcut Alt + P. This feature allows you to:

  • set whether the left navigation is always visible or hidden;

  • set the theme color;

  • set the left navigation to either a light or dark theme;

  • adjust the font size; and

  • choose your preferred language.

Your changes will automatically be applied and saved once you click outside of the preferences tab.

Logout

The Logout button ends your session in the EBS. You may also do this by clicking the button or using the shortcut Alt + G.

Great job! You’re now familiar with how to navigate the EBS system. We encourage you to read about the Data browsers present in most tools or you can get started immediately with Experiment Creation.
