Breeding Stage
Plant breeding involves selecting and crossing plants to create new varieties with desirable traits. The process generally follows several stages to achieve a desired outcome. A stage in EBS is one cycle of planting, and a cycle is 1 season.
Defining a breeding stage requires an abbreviation, name, and a description. The abbreviation can be part of automating the name of an experiment. ie. PR-HB-2025-WS-001, HB here is an abbreviation of Hybridization block.
A breeding stage can be classified according to the experiment types in EBS. Here are the examples.
Experiment Type | Breeding Stages | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Intentional Crossing Nursery and Cross Parent Nurseries where there is an interaction of 2 biological materials |
|
| 2 | Generation Nursery |
|
| 3 | Breeding Trial |

| 4 | Observation |

Pipeline
A pipeline, is a set of goals (i.e., breeding targets), or parameters that a stage is a part of. Typically, this is dictated by the institute and can be general or specific. An example is the list of breeding pipelines in IRRI, which can be seen here.
Project
A project is a planned and systematic effort to selectively breed plants or animals to achieve specific desired traits or characteristics in future generations.
