Manage Traits and Collect Occurrence data using Field book
Traits
Traits is a feature in Field Book that allows users to manage the traits required for data collection efficiently. It allows users to select or deselect the specific traits needed for each occurrence, ensuring a more tailored and organized data collection process.
Do not Delete All Traits when you have an unsynced data.
How to manage Traits?
Go to “Traits.“
Select by checking the variables or traits for data collection.
Go back .
Go to “Collect.”
Collect
Collect is a feature in Field Book that allows users to enter and record data seamlessly. It functions like a spreadsheet, providing clear structure for organizing important details during the data collection process.
In the image below for FIELD Import Occurrence, we can see that when importing an occurrence, we already know the number of traits involved and have defined the Primary and Secondary identifiers. But how can we view this in the Collect section? The image below shows how the occurrence identifiers are represented with color-coded numbers.
How to Guided Steps to Navigate and Enter Data?
In the COLLECT Data Collection view,
displays the traits and variables available for the occurrence.
highlights the primary identifier, which is the Plot, mapped to the plot number of the occurrence.
shows the secondary identifier, ObservationUnitName, mapped to the Plot Code of the occurrence.
Once you have confirmed that your occurrence and plot are correct, you can begin entering your data using the app's keyboard. The keyboard will adjust based on the data type of the trait—sometimes it will be numeric, alphanumeric, or display option buttons if the trait has predefined choices. In those cases, simply select the appropriate value from the available buttons.
Points to remember
When the value is red, it indicates that the value is saved.
Using the mobile applications buttom menu,
If you want to delete the value, click the trash bin icon .
If no value applies, click NA icon .

How to use the Camera Scanner button?
The Camera Scanner button allows users to quickly scan field labels to locate plots, removing the need to search manually by clicking through each one. This feature streamlines the process, enabling users to scan, set traits, and collect data efficiently.
How to use Collect Grid view button?
The Grid view button provides users with a quick overview of their collected data, making it easy to spot any missing plot traits. Users can simply click on an empty cell to instantly navigate to the specific plot and trait where data is missing, streamlining the process of completing data collection.
From the top menu, select ' Grid .'
If you notice any empty cells, click on them to be directed to the corresponding plot and trait where you can enter the missing data.
To adjust row headers, simply click the Row Headers button on the right side of the top menu.
The grid view will display the updated row labels.
How to use Collect Summary button?
The Summary button offers a quick overview of your plot data, making it easy to identify any missing or misplaced information collected.
From the top menu, select ' Summary' to see all trait data for each plot.
To customize your summary view, click the Pencil button on the upper right of the top menu.
You can then check or uncheck the variables you want to add or remove from the plot Summary view. Rest assured, this will not impact the traits or variables set in Traits."
You may now check the plot Summary view.
How to use NA button?
The NA button enables users to easily input "NA" for any trait value. Instead of manually typing "NA" multiple times, this tool provides a convenient tap function that automatically enters "NA" for each trait.
How to use Trash button?
The Trash button lets users quickly delete all values for a specific trait in a plot, saving time compared to erasing each characters one by one.
